Polydopamine‑encapsulated carbon dots to boost analytical performance for microplastics detection in fluorescence mode

A kind of sulfur-doped carbon dots was prepared which were encapsulated with polydopamine (S-CDs@PDA) that has fluorescence response on polyethylene (PE) microplastics (MPs). Modified membranes were constructed using S-CDs@PDA for MP detection. Through heating and vacuum filtration process, yellow emission from the modified membrane appeared because of the combination between S-CDs@PDA and PE MPs. Notably, the fluorescence signal value of PE MPs detected by S-CDs@PDA-modified membrane was 21.3% higher than that of unmodified S-CDs membrane, and the detection efficiency was 8% higher than that of S-CDs membrane. The minimum detection limit for modified membranes was 4 mg. Due to the good adhesion of polydopamine (PDA), S-CDs@PDA-modified membrane was more easily adh ered to PE MPs, showing its excellent detection ability. The rapid quantitative detection of PE MPs in 10 min was realized with a linear equation of y = 3081x + 3686.1 in a linear range of 4–14 mg. Such modified membrane exhibited excellent anti-photobleaching using continuous 365-nm excitation and its sensing performance was further confirmed in sea and river water samples. S-CDs@ PDA could detect solid MP powders as well as MPs dispersed in liquids. The detection method constructed with a modified glass fiber filter membrane enables rapid identification and quantitative detection of PE MPs without relying on large-scale instrumentation. This study provided research ideas for fluorescent tracing of PE MPs and paved the way for quantitative detection of micron-sized plastics with smaller particle sizes.

Within- and Between-Person Loneliness and Self-Esteem During Emerging Adulthood: The Moderating Role of Emotion Regulation Dif fi culties

Emerging adulthood brings concerns about sense of self and belonging to the forefront, a period during which many young adults experience loneliness and mental health challenges. Self-esteem, or one’s evaluation of self-worth, may both predict and/or be predicted by loneliness, though longitudinal research is needed to disentangle the nature of these associations. Therefore, the link between loneliness and self-esteem was examined while considering the moderating role of emotion regulation difficulties. Participants (N = 1,217, Mage = 18.14, 71% female-identifying) completed a survey at three timepoints over one year. Randomintercept cross-lagged panel modelling indicated a bidirectional within-person association between increases in loneliness and decreases i n self-esteem. Emotion regulation difficulties did not moderate the association, though it was associated with both loneliness and self-esteem. These findings suggest that during emerging adulthood, loneliness may hinder self-esteem which is likely to lead to further loneliness. Keywords loneliness, self-esteem, emotion regulation, emerging adulthood Emerging adulthood involves shifts in social networks (e.g., leaving home to attend college) that not only create opportunities for new social connections but also increase risks for social isolation and loneliness (Arnett et al., 2014). Loneliness has become increasingly prevalent among emerging adults (aged 18-25 years) (Buecker et al., 2021), with rates comparable to

Cross-National Bridge Management Systems: A Geo- matics Framework for Italian and Swiss Authorities

Effective bridge management requires structured methods that integrate information gained through visual inspections, non-destructive tests or monitoring systems to prioritize maintenance activities on bridges at a territorial level. The Italian and Swiss authorities offer different perspectives on maintenance prioritization, with Italy emphasizing multi-level classification and flexible data integration for risk assessment, and Switzerland relying on condition assessment and a centralized BMS including damage predictive capabilities to determine maintenance policy, while minimizing the long-term costs. Both approaches highlight the need for interoperable digital solutions to collect, analyse and process large amount of heterogeneous data. In addition, recent federal regulations enforce the "open by default" principle, promoting transparency, participation, and innovation using open-source software to fulfil Public Authority tasks. Moving from these considerations, the study proposes a modular framework for bridge management that includes inventory and data management, inspection workflows, risk analysis, predictive monitoring, GIS/BIM integration, intervention planning, and regulatory compliance. By leveraging open source and widely used tools, the framework improves data accessibility, interoperability, and decision-making efficiency. A comparative analysis with existing proprietary solutions highlights large possibilities of improvement in terms
